After being solicited to provide solutions for a wide range of fluid dynamic problems, Dr. Philip Watts founded applied fluids engineering, inc. in the fall of 1998 as a business registered with Los Angeles County, California. Incorporation in the State of California followed in the fall of 1999.

Dr. Watts obtained his B.Eng. and M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and completed his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering Sciences at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California.

Dr. Watts is a pioneer in landslide tsunamis, establishing and expanding the field of science with long term collaborator Prof. David Tappin. Dr. Watts is one of the managers of Geowave, a 4th order Boussinesq model of tsunami generation, propagation, and inundation created with Drs. Grilli and Kirby. Dr. Watts has the most experience conducting Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Assessment in the world, for the insurance, oil & gas, and nuclear industries.
